So here's the story: I crafted a hand-made custom Hypnotoad as a tribute to Futurama. I listed it on Etsy along with my other pop-culture tributes. Last week a lawyer from Fox sent a cease and desist order to Etsy and made them pull the listing down. I know derivative works like these are protected by Fair Use, but who has the money to defend themselves in court just to prove the point?
So I decided I won't be bullied by a network, and I'm moving this item whether they like it or not. And while we're at it, let's raise some money for an awesome non-profit organization!
I've just created a listing on eBay where bidders can bid to donate money to the USO. As a thank you gift for the donation I will give the Hypnotoad to the auction winner. And to make the donation go further, I will dollar match the winning bid up to $100. That means if the winning bid is $100, I will send $100 out of my own pocket to the USO, too, for a total donation of $200.
